James Cartlidge MP

James Cartlidge MP has welcomed the news that the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Skills), Alex Burghart MP will be attending his Employment & Skills Fair in Great Cornard at the end of April. James is hosting the Fair on Friday 22nd April 2022 from 10:00 – 13:30 at The Stevenson Centre, Great Cornard, CO10 0WD. James has organised the Fair after local employers raised the recruitment challenges that they have been facing. During the sessions of the South Suffolk Taskforce, businesses also highlighted concerns about the way in which younger people are informed about the types of employment opportunities nearby.

A range of businesses and organisations have been invited to attend the Fair to discuss the vacancies, apprenticeships and work experience placements that they have to offer. People from across South Suffolk will be invited to attend, specifically those who are seeking employment, looking for a new opportunity, and those looking to develop their skillset. The Fair has received strong support so far from the Department for Work & Pensions and the local Job Centre who will be holding CV workshops and 1-1 advice sessions, focussing on upskilling local people.

James Cartlidge MP says: “Since I was first elected in 2015, it’s been one of my top priorities to champion opportunities for young people in my constituency. Alongside this, during multiple constituency businesses visits, employers have raised issues with recruitment and the skills gap locally. I have therefore organised an Employment & Skills Fair with the aim of showcasing the opportunities that are on offer in our area. It’s fantastic news that the Skills Minister has agreed to attend, to meet with our brilliant employers and to hear more about the skills challenge in South Suffolk.

“As we have now reached the end of all Covid restrictions in England, it is important that we make the most of our unique position. We have an abundance of excellent opportunities and vacancies, providing interesting and rewarding employment for people of all ages, as we bounce back from the pandemic.

“I would encourage all South Suffolk residents, who are interested in opportunities with our brilliant local businesses, to attend. For more information, please visit www.jamescartlidge.com/jobs-fair or contact my office on 020 7219 4875.”

Julia Nix

Julia Nix, East Anglia District Manager at DWP says: “We are delighted to be supporting Mr Cartlidge at the Employment & Skills Fair. It is a great opportunity to help young people take their first steps in to the jobs market, as well as supporting those who have been unemployed for some time.  It's important to link local employers up with those who are seeking employment so that everyone has the opportunity and support to find a good job to help them get on in life. This is what this Jobs Fair is designed to do.”

Chris Starkie

Chris Starkie, Chief Executive of New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, says: “Recruitment is proving a real challenge for a lot of local employers and making young people aware of the vacancies, apprenticeships and work experience placements businesses have to offer will help address labour shortages. We need to build a workforce that is fit for the future and aligned to employers needs and inward investment opportunities, particularly STEM. Events like this can inspire young people about their career options and improve aspirations.”

Paul Simon

Paul Simon, Head of Public Affairs & Strategic Communications at Suffolk Chamber of Commerce says: “Suffolk Chamber very much welcomes this initiative and is especially proud to be sponsoring the Employment & Skills Fair. It’s just this kind of event which offers people of all ages and local employers the chance to better appreciate employment opportunities.

“As the voice of business across the county, we have been working very closely with schools, colleges and other training providers to ensure that the skills pipeline for Suffolk gives our young people and wider workforce what they will need over the longer-term to deliver sustainable prosperity for themselves and for the businesses they work for. We are especially looking forward to discussing with the Minister for Skills the enormous potential of the employer-led Suffolk and Norfolk’s Local Skills Improvement Plan.”
